Guidance for international students

When can I start working full-time?

As an international student, you can begin full-time work after your official course end-date passes and you have completed all the academic course requirements. It may in some instances be possible to begin full-time work four weeks earlier, if your academic department can confirm to the Student Immigration team that you have submitted everything. More information is available on the Student Immigration website.

Help employers understand your work rights

When applying for jobs with small and medium-sized companies, you can attach the Work Rights at the end of your course letter and Graduate Route visa information leaflet to help these employers understand your work rights, as you transition from Student visa to Post-Study Work visas (such as the Graduate route or Skilled Worker route). Read more on our International Careers Support pages.

When can I apply for the Graduate Route visa?

You must not make a Graduate Route visa application until you have received an email notification from the University of Warwick specifically confirming that you can apply, as well as having met the other application requirements. This usually takes place a few days after your degree is formally awarded by the University, and for most PGT students it will be by mid-December. There is more information available on our Student Immigration website.

Resubmitting your dissertation or resitting exams

If you are interested in applying for the Graduate Route work visa and need to resubmit your dissertation or resit exams, you will need to apply for a Student visa to cover the period of the academic extension. Please see guidance on our Immigration pages. If you are not planning on staying or working in the UK, you are not required to extend your Student visa if your academic department allows you to resubmit or resit from overseas.

e-Visa guidance

If your current Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) expires on 31 December 2024, and you think you might need to remain or return to the UK after this date, you should register for an e-Visa in good time. Learn how to create a UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account to access your e-Visa.

Warwick Alumni

As you near the end of your course, now is the perfect time to start exploring the benefits of becoming part of the Warwick alumni community – a diverse and powerful network of over 293,000 alumni worldwide which you will join upon graduation.

You can register for Warwickgrad - an online community exclusively for Warwick students and alumni. A place for you to make mentoring connections, join professional groups based on your interests or location and access a wide range of resources to support your career.

Although access to Warwick buildings will be revoked after your course end date, your account will transition to an alumni account after graduation. At that point, you can apply for an alumni card, giving you access to the Library, University House, and the Sports and Wellness Hub (if you have a sports membership).

To find out more about the alumni benefits available to you, visit warwick.ac.uk/alumni or contact the team at alumni@warwick.ac.uk.
