Hello Student,

Good afternoon everyone!
Following the recent government announcement, and in line with existing Plan B regulations continuing until January 26, the wearing of face coverings is to continue as it has been so far during term 2 along with other guidance in place. The University will consider the new situation in the light of any sector specific guidance and we'll share an update next week. Thank you for your ongoing support as we keep our community safe.

This week we've teamed up with the Library for a newsletter takeover! Meet student editor Harry, and watch his introduction to the project:

library takeover harry sun intro video

"The Library is more than a place for books and more than a provider of online databases. It's a world-class space and range of services, and provides us with a second home on campus. We spend our time here tirelessly writing essays, panicking over referencing, or procrastinating when we know that essay deadline is coming up! The Library provides us with a space to create, and a space for us to shape.

"Read on for a compilation of need to know library information for the start of term 2. Find out about upcoming events, read blogs, discover opportunities and learn some fun facts about your Library. Let us know what you think of this newsletter and what you’d like to see in the next takeover."

#KeepItSafe - your belongings in the Library - by Daira Povez Gamboa

Warwick is a safe place, however, thefts can happen. The Library’s Keep it Safe campaign aims to remind us of the importance of “keeping valuables on you at all times”. If you’ve ever wondered what the Magpie image that pops up around the Library is all about – this is the answer – ‘Crooks’ (a characteristically acquisitive magpie!) is the Keep It Safe campaign mascot. The campaign began back in March 2019 and the Library has been sharing tips on how to keep your valuables safeYou can also check out some top tips from student writer Kayvon about keeping your stuff safe.

Know your library zone - by Olivia Collins

Where do you study best? There are study spaces to suit all needs in the Library. For group work and work with friends, the collaborative zones on floors 1 and 2 are perfect. For quiet independent work, try floors 3 to 5, and remember to keep quiet on stairways and other areas in between zones. If you like it even quieter, head to one of the silent rooms on floor 2 extension. There are also bookable accessible and sensory study rooms for those registered with Disability Services – find out more and book. Throughout the Library (and in other study spaces on campus) there are noise zones to suit everyone – look out for the zone information banners. For better study success, choose your zone!

Did you know? - by Matt Munnelly

  • Visits: After a dramatic drop in average daily visitors to the Library following the pandemic, the number is increasing at 1,667 visitors a day, up from 706 in 2020/21. Between the Library returning to full capacity in term 1 and new refurbished spaces opening up, this number will hopefully continue to rise.
  • Busiest times: Getting a good start to the week, the busiest day for student visitors is Monday. The average visitor to the Library stays for a little under 2 hours and the busiest time of day on average is currently 3pm-4pm.
  • Expenditure: A considerable amount of the Library’s budget goes towards eBooks - one textbook cost over £25,000 for a year's access and the Library has even received offers for titles at twice this price.
  • Fun Fact: The most popular book in term 1 was ‘Finance and Accounting for Non-specialists 11th Ed’ by Peter Atrill and Eddie Mclaney, getting checked out 89 times. It was also the most requested book (39 hold requests) held at the Library. Were you one of the 89? What was your key learning point from the book? Tell us via Twitter, Instagram or Facebook
